INDIAN HAND PAINTED TYPOGRAPHY
INDIAN HAND PAINTED TYPOGRAPHY

Hand-painted signboards decorate the sides of Indian highways. You'll see swarms of enormous trucks adorned with vibrant and similarly hand-painted truck art as you drive along these highways. These intricate signages adorn the streets of India.
The visual language of movie posters had a major aesthetic influence on these signboards.

The goal of this initiative is to possibly
REVIVE

the dying art of Indian street calligraphy in today's technologically advanced world.
THE PROCESS

Fort Kochi a place with complex handpainted signboards will be our main area of focus for this project.
Fort Kochi was explored in several areas, and photographs of vehicles and signboards were taken.
The images were digitalized while keeping in mind the fundamentals of typography.

REVAMPING

Raw image taken from Fort Kochi

The image was cropped and straightened from the side perspective

The letters are then modified by uniformly increasing the height of each letter
DIGITALISING
The straightened pictures were corrected again and vectorised exactly as they were created because flaws are signs of human engagement.

This also provides information about the typical letterforms used in earlier times
